Untitled - Karel Appel

Untitled
Karel Appel (1921-2006)

Karel Appel was a Dutch painter who helped found the CoBrA movement. Named for the initials of members' home cities (Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), CoBrA was a European avant-garde movement based on freedom of color and form. Active from 1949 to 1952, CoBrA has a particular interest in Marxism and in modernism, with strong aversion to surrealism. Appel was also highly influenced by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Jean Dubuffet.

Untitled is an oil on photograph composition that measures 11 inches by 14 inches and is signed on the lower right "Appel." This work was acquired by Christie's in Amsterdam on June 10, 1999.
